Dead Man's Run 5k and Kids Fun Run

Welcome to Historic Congressional Cemetery's Dead Man's Run!, a bare bones race for dead serious runners who want to stay one step ahead of the ultimate Reapo Man. Race starts with a toll of the funeral bell, continues throughout the cemetery and onto the Anacostia Trail for a ghostly evening run full of spooky music and fun! Join us in the beer tent after the race to reward your own survival. Costumes encouraged, with prizes for best costumes and team costume! Form a team to compete with your friends - and we love to see creative team names.

  • We do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion.

  • Running with a pup? Please: no retractable leashes; all participating dogs must be properly vaccinated and well-socialized.

  • We are unable to offer refunds or race transfers.

  • Our races are rain or shine, and there is no rain date for the race.

The Basics

Start Time: The 5k begins at 6 pm near the east end of the cemetery. The kids run begins shortly after, at around 6:05 pm.

Cost: $40 for the 5k, $10 for the untimed kids run (distance is a little under 1/2 a mile; t-shirts do not come with kids run entry).

Packet Pickup: Packet pickup is race day only, and begins at 4:30 pm in the Chapel (inside the Cemetery).

Bag check: Bags may be left inside the Chapel during the race until 7 pm, and a volunteer will oversee them during this time.

The Perks

Each 5k race entry comes a Dead Man's Run race t-shirt (guaranteed for those registering by August 31st) and a ticket which is redeemable for one free beer, thanks to our generous sponsor Fulcrum Properties (additional beers will be for sale). Also comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit!

The Course
Our 5k course is flat, fast, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course.
